Battenkill Bollywood returns to Carey Hill this October with another pop-up dance mob you won’t want to miss! Together with special guests, the Deerfield Valley Dancing Witches of Southern Vermont, they’ll weave a spell of pure dance joy, performing the Wolfshäger Hexenbrut broom dance plus other magical surprises. Be there Sunday, October 13 at 12pm as they fly in to shake the bacon in a celebration of community and the harvest season!

Festival of Fire 2024

Salem Art Work’s Festival of Fire celebrates the transformative nature of fire. This annual event is a weekend exploration of the process, production, and performative aspects of making art with fire.

Join us for a family-friendly weekend with hands-on workshops, artist talks, demonstrations, performances, and exhibitions centered around art and fire! Come together to share techniques, ideas, and resources in glass, blacksmithing, iron casting, ceramics, and fabrication.

Don’t miss the spectacle and wonder of the Festival of Fire!

FRIDAY:

  • Steel Inflation Demo by Justin O’Rourke 6 PM

  • Justin's demonstration and artist talk is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

  • Keynote Speeches, Barn 2

SATURDAY:

  • Anna Koplik Hammer Demonstrations, 10 AM - 2 PM

  • Veggie Coupela Furnace, Welding Bay

    • Furnace shared courtesy of Jeremy Entwistle

    • High-Tech, sustainable furnace! This is a must-see!Burn In, 12 PM

    • Approx. 15 - 30 Minutes for Hot Metal

  • Production Furnace

    • Burn In, 2 PM

    • Metal Pour Approx. 3 PM - 3:30 PM

    • Scratch Blocks to be poured 3 PM - 5 PM

    • Production Pour ending at Approx. 6 PM

  • Scratch Blocks 12 PM - 3 PM

    • Scratch Blocks take about 30 minutes to make. Drop in anytime 12 PM - 3 PM

    • Finish Scratch Block by 4 PM

    • Pick-Up Sat. 4 PM - 7 PM, Sun. 9 AM - 12 PM

The Solar Kitchen Unit

The Solar Kitchen Unit - Saturday July 13th - From 12pm Our best machines are made of sunshine. The Solar Kitchen Unit is an autonomous, modular kitchen based on the work of Maria Telkes, a Hungarian engineer (1900-1995) who pioneered research in solar energy. Among her many inventions, she designed reproducible, inexpensive solar ovens that have been largely forgotten in archives along with Tekles’ legacy. Join us Saturday, July 13th at Salem Art Works after the Harder Barter to cook together, highlighting Tekles’ work and local produce. Find us outside, on top of a hill, soaking up the sun.
