With basic “tools” producing an accurate depiction of what’s in front of you is easy! (no it’s hard, but achievable) and in this workshop, Matt Chinian will introduce the “sight-size” method, a basic concept in observational realism, and how to apply it to painting urban landscapes. Matt Chinian will do a short demo, then we will spread out on the SAW campus and paint.

We will work on composition, value, color, and use of mass and line in painting. Color mixing and paint application will also be introduced. Participants should have their own materials, brushes, easel, etc...

This workshop is coinciding with Urban Landscape Artist with The Hyde’s exhibition Richard Estes: Urban Landscapes, paint in the spirit of Richard Estes

The instructor will demonstrate the safe and proper use of a variety of equipment, then students will choose metal scrap material to create a sculpture of their own design. Techniques covered include heating, bending, and cutting using an oxy-acetylene torch, cutting using a plasma cutter, and MIG welding.

This one-day, six-hour workshop is available for beginners with no prior experience but is also useful for people with some prior experience as well.

Students must wear closed-toed shoes, have hair tied, a hat or bandana (recommended), and long pants. Wear natural-fibered clothing and avoid synthetic fabrics.
