We are so excited for this After School Blacksmithing program made possible by Shoppe off Broadway and the Historic Salem Courthouse.

Students will learn fundamental blacksmithing techniques, from basic forging to finishing work. Creativity and artistic expression are encouraged, allowing students to create personal and unique projects. This after-school program is also great for exploring blacksmithing as a potential career and providing insight into the historical significance of blacksmithing.

Clothing Requirement: Students must wear closed-toed shoes, have hair tied, a hat or bandana (recommended), and long pants. Synthetic Fabrics can melt if exposed to heat, natural-fibered clothing only.

Ages: 11 - 18 (6th - 12th grade)
Skill Level: Beginner (No experience necessary)

6th - 8th Grades: Tuesdays (March 19, 26, April 2, 9) 3:00 - 5:00
9th - 12th Grades: Thursdays (March 21, 28, April 4, 11) 3:30 -5:30

Release of Liability & Consent to First Aid & Emergency Medical

I, the parent/guardian of the enrolled student, will not hold Salem Art Works or its staff, board of directors, instructors, and volunteers responsible for any accident or illness, including infection or with viruses or bacteria that may occur during the After School Blacksmithing program. If an injury or accident does occur and the legal guardians/emergency contacts cannot be reached, I authorize Salem Art Works and its staff to obtain emergency care for my child.

Safety & Maturity

Students enrolled in After School Blacksmithing will be participating in a workshop that can be inherently dangerous if care is not taken. Burns, cuts, and other similar injuries can easily occur if students do not follow instructions and appropriate safety precautions. Students must be able to follow instructions and show a level of maturity appropriate for the workshops they are enrolled in. If students cannot work safely, they may be asked to leave the program without a refund. By enrolling your student in Blacksmithing you are confirming their ability to follow instructions and work safely in a group environment.

Photo Release

I permit Salem Art Works to photograph the student while participating in After-School Blacksmithing. The photos will be used at the discretion of Salem Art Works for marketing purposes.

The Shoppe off Broadway is Historic Salem Courthouse’s volunteer-run thrift store with the goal to provide affordable clothing/goods to locals and give back to the community with the proceeds. The Shoppe off Broadway has given nearly $283,000 in the form of donations, grants and scholarships to the Girls on the Run, Salem Central School, Lunch, Learn and Play program, Fuel Fund, and so much more back to the community.
