MIKAELA CASTLEDINE
Artist statement
Currently, my sculptural practice uses found timber with added sections of crochet to emphasize form. This method encourages you to look at the world differently and the distorted shapes of found timber bring their own idiosyncratic style to the work. This method can easily travel as timber components are collected locally. In addition to honing newly acquired woodworking skills, I am interested in translating these works into cast metal and would hope to use the opportunity of this residency to learn about mold making and metal casting. In addition, I am producing stitched landscapes of place and memory and would undertake R&D for a work based on the landscape around Salem to be completed later. I am a writer of poetry, art criticism, and other forms of written expression, so alongside my art, I anticipate producing a series of poems and other writing during the residency.
