Young Artist Residency - Session 2

  • Salem Art Works 19 Cary Lane Salem NY 12865 (map)

Successful applicants are in the early stages of their artistic development and must demonstrate a clear commitment to building their artistic career. Visual artists working in any medium, as well as writers, choreographers, musicians, and performers, may apply.

The Young Artist program is eight weeks; August 1 - September 15. Young Artists participate in a work exchange which averages 30 hours a week to support the daily operations of SAW. Tasks include outdoor physical labor, maintaining the grounds, cleaning, cooking, events, and special projects.

Artists receive an outdoor wooden tent platform (12’ x 12’), board, studio, access to facilities, and one complimentary workshop. Artists also have access to technical support in any of SAW’s facilities; blacksmithing, ceramics, CNC machine, foundry, glass, screen printing, metal fabrication, and the wood shop.

Residents will be responsible for the cost of additional workshops, materials, and travel to and from Salem Art Works. All residents, including Young Artists, help with cooking and cleaning on a rotating schedule. Working with SAW staff, Young Artists will develop their skills and professional practice by participating in presentations, studio visits and critiques, open studios, and resident artist exhibitions.
