ARTIST STATEMENT:

I am a mixed media artist living in Vermont. My work often combines aspects of realism and abstract through a combination of drawing, painting, and collage. My area of focus is the human face. I am captivated with the many emotions, shapes, textures, folds, and colors. I love to assemble portraits by applying pieces of magazine or book illustration along with gouache, alcohol marker, or inks. I allow the bits of ripped paper to guide my process through a piece; repeating colors and visual textures to blend the real and abstract. I use different acrylic mediums in my work to add depth and physical texture. It is my intention to keep the viewer searching for the connection between the drawing or painting andcollage; the real and the abstract. I have familiarized myself with digital art over the last three years, and recently began dabbling with digital collage.

My pieces sometimes distort features to add interest. I use gel pens to add small details or to create a space of “netting” within the piece. I am currently experimenting with inks, and learning new techniques from online classes with the Kara Bullock School of Art. Typically, I like to saturate my piece with rich color, but there is something to be said about less is more, and so I am practicing using India ink both full strength and watered down to create delicate portraits, utilizing the negative space to enhance the focal point of the portrait itself.

I am very passionate about art. I need art daily as selfcare. I am inspired by current contemporary artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Deb Weiers and Olga Furman. I am inspired by music, and often work at the pace of what I listen to.

I look forward to learning more in a space that caters to creativity and affords an artist the opportunity to grow, as well as to share knowledge and experience with like-minded people
